Tour description

Your tour begins the moment you are picked up from your accommodation in Reykjavík. The drive to Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park, where the Silfra fissure is located, takes approximately one hour. Your guide will introduce you to the unique geological and cultural history surrounding the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Þingvellir National Park and tell you more about Silfra.

Upon arrival at the Silfra fissure, your guide will give you a detailed briefing of the dive site and the most important aspects of dry suit diving. You will then be assisted in setting up the dive equipment. Only high quality BARE and Buddy brand SCUBA equipment and APEX regulators are used.

Then it's time to take the plunge and experience diving into Silfra's pristine, crystal clear water. Originating from Langjokull glacier some 50 km (30 mi) away, and filtered over decades by Iceland's volcanic basaltic rock, the water is sifted to absolute purity. You can easily take a sip during your dive; you won't find purer drinking water anywhere. The water purity also accounts for the amazing subsurface visibility of more than 100 m (328 ft.).

During your dive you will explore the four main parts of Silfra. You will float through Big Crack, Silfra's narrowest section, then, as the fissure widens, you will discover the majestic Silfra Hall (with the possibility of local geese and ducks paddling overhead). Near the opening to the Thingvallavatn Lake, you enter the Silfra Cathedral; if there are divers ahead you will see the 'chandelier effect' of their rising bubbles. Your dive finishes in the endless visibility of Silfra Lagoon.

After this first dive, the challenging but rewarding 250 m path will take us back (still in dive gear) to the starting point, where we warm our hands and spirits with hot chocolate and cookies. If you need some assistance with your gear, don't hesitate to ask your guide.

In the summer, this tour includes two dives. However, in the winter, if the outside temperature drops below 0°C, only one extended (40-45 minute) dive is conducted, with a maximum depth of 18 metres, for the safety and comfort of our divers.

• Meeting time at the Information Centre at Þingvellir National Park: approx. 1 hour later
• Min / Max: For your safety and convenience we conduct this tour with a minimum of 1 and a maximum ratio of 4 divers per dive guide.

Prerequisites:

Participants must:
be at least 150cm tall and 45 kg
be at least 12 years of age (minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian)
have a Scuba dive certification (PADI Open Water or equivalent)
be comfortable in water and be able to swim
be physically fit
be ready to wear a sometimes tight & constricting dry suit
not be pregnant

Anyone above 60 years old and/or with a history of medical condition fills out and present us the medical form attached here.

Silfra is an extreme environment— the water is near freezing 2-4°C (35-39°F) year around, it is a health and safety aspect we take very seriously.

Please Note:

In order to join this tour you must have dry suit certification OR 10 logged dry suit dives within the last two years of tour date and be able to provide written proof from a diving instructor of these dry suit dives.

● SCUBA dive certification card details, including the date of the most recent dive

Please bring with you

● Your SCUBA dive certification card
● A towel, warm woollen socks & undergarments; a change of clothes
● If you have bad eyesight: wear contact lenses or bring your own goggles with prescription.

Notes

● If you have never dived in a dry suit before, we strongly recommend that you prepare for this tour with a dry suit course. You will learn how to safely and confidently dive in a dry suit and thus enjoy diving in Silfra even more. You will also receive a PADI Dry Suit Specialty Certificate, which is an internationally recognised certification and often a requirement for diving in challenging cold-water dive sites elsewhere in the world.
